Large Saneh (architectural panel) from the exterior of a Torajan granary (Alang). Constructed of heavy wood planks and carved in low relief with traditional geometric and auspicious patterns including the Pa'tangke lumu or "moss branch" motif and five stylized buffalo heads. The ornamentation was meant to drive away evil influences; however, the buffalo is also a symbol of wealth and prosperity. With original brushed in earth pigments. Toraja, South Sulawesi Island. Indonesian Archipelago. Early 20th century. 57.5" high x 115" wide x 1.5" deep.
