Large Saneh (architectural panel) from the exterior of a Torajan granary (Alang). Constructed of heavy wood planks, the surface carved in low relief with simple geometric patterns, the hinged door unadorned. Traditional Torajan homes and granaries have steeply pitched roofs with elongated gables resembling the prows of ocean going vessels. The upswept gable ends represent the upturned horns of the water buffalo. The buffalo is a symbol of high status, strength, courage and pugnacity. Heavily weathered with lichen patina. Toraja, South Sulawesi Island. Indonesian Archipelago. Early 20th century. 46" high x 106" wide x 7" deep.
