Japanese keyaki (zelkova) wood fricition lock, yokogi, one could adjust the height of the hook above the irori, or sunken hearth fire. The yokogi darkly patinated from years of expose to smoke of the hearth fire has a curving form with lobed end and reishi head. The reshi, more commonly known as by its Chinese name lingzhi is a Chinese fungus of immortality, which also had the ability to grant wishes. The wish granting ability coming from its Chinese name which is a homonym also meaning "as you wish". Mounted on a contemporary stand. 19th century. 12.5" high x 15" wide x 3.5" deep.
